Heartbeats are sent between the active and passive server on standby. If heartbeats from the passive server cannot reach the active server, the passive server takes over the active IP address and resumes service.
In active-active, both servers are managing traffic, spreading the load between each other. DNS should know about both servers if they are client-facing.
